What God requires

God requires his people to fear him, live to please him, and love and serve him wholeheartedly (Deuteronomy 10:12). He reminded the Israelites of their slavery in Egypt and how he freed them by his power, thus demanding their obedience. This call to love and obedience also extends to us, as we were freed from sin by the redemptive blood of Jesus Christ. What, then, does God require of us? God requires us to treat widows and orphans fairly, love foreigners, take care of our weak ones, bring back those who have wandered off from the truth, keep our promise to God, pay our tithes, be faithful to God, love God, worship and obey him.  Knowing what God demands, we must not let our hearts be stubborn but instead respond to what God requires to receive all God promised.  Love was at the heart of Jesus’ earthly ministry, and everything he did was motivated by love and compassion. Jesus commanded us to love God with all our hearts and to love our neighbour as we love ourselves. What does loving God entail? Loving God involves obedience to his commandments. We are to worship God, be faithful to him, and only make our promises in his name. Some Christians promise to serve God when things are good, but when they fall on hard times, they grumble against God and walk away. They seek help elsewhere and abandon their faith. We are to praise God for who he is and what he has done. We are to exalt the Lord and have reverence for him. We are not to grumble against him no matter what we may be going through but approach his throne with joy and reverence. We wonder how to approach God's throne joyfully when we're saddened.

Coming before Him with praise and gratitude lifts our heavy hearts. Heaven cherishes a joyful soul, and to love God means first loving our neighbour as ourselves. Many people find this difficult to achieve, particularly in today’s world. We are to forgive, be patient and tolerant of others, show affection and compassion, and be generous towards others. We must live in ways that please God; when we do, we see his power at work. We cannot love God and love the world at the same time. We must choose whom to serve. God is our heavenly Father and knows what is best for us. His thoughts towards us are good. When we seek him in spirit and truth, we will indeed find him.
