The power of togetherness

We often feel God's presence more vividly when we come together as a community. Moments of laughter, shared meals, singing, worship, and fellowship help us connect not only with one another but also with the divine. There's a profound strength in numbers; after all, no man is truly an island, and God designed us to coexist rather than live in isolation.

Sometimes our personal choices can lead to isolation. Choices rooted in unforgiveness, pride, or judgment can separate us from others and from God. However, in these collective moments of togetherness—when hearts unite in love and purpose—we often find the most profound glimpses of God's presence. While we can certainly encounter God in our quiet, solitary moments (as He encourages us to "be still and know that I am God"), community brings a unique richness to our understanding of Him.

When we gather in love, we begin to shift our focus from our own worries to the needs of those around us. This transformation allows us to truly see others, to recognize their struggles, and to appreciate the beauty within them. I remember attending a fellowship where one of the leaders emphasised the importance of praying for one another. He encouraged us to pair up and lift each other in prayer. I found myself sitting next to a woman who seemed somewhat anxious.

As we held hands, I turned to her and gently asked, "What can I pray for you?" She hesitated for a moment, then shared her heavy heart, telling me, "I've been feeling suicidal. Life is just becoming too much for me." In that moment, I felt a deep responsibility to understand the weight she carried, so I asked her to share what had been troubling her. She opened up about her struggles: her battle with cancer, her fractured relationship with her daughter, and the difficulties she was facing with a man in her life.

As I clutched her hands tighter, feeling her pain, I began to pray. With each word, I focused on her needs, directing my thoughts and intentions toward the root of her problems. I poured my heart into that prayer, and my own burdens seemed to fade into the background. At that moment, my concerns felt insignificant compared to what she was enduring.

This experience highlighted the power of togetherness; praying for her helped me find a remarkable sense of peace and hope. In that fellowship, amidst shared vulnerability and support, we both encountered God. It was a beautiful reminder that in unity and love, we can both uplift one another and deepen our connection to God.

The devil thrives in isolation, because in these moments of solitude we become our most vulnerable selves. I'm captivated by documentaries that explore the lives of animals. In many ways, I gain more insight and understanding from these documentaries than from interacting with people. It may sound unusual, but observing nature holds a profound wisdom.

One of my favourite scenes is when lions set out on their hunts. They are strategic in their approach, keenly aware that their best chance of success lies in targeting animals that are isolated from the group. Often, they look for a young, inexperienced creature, one that lacks the strength or experience to escape. The lions employ a calculated method, isolating their prey from the herd before launching their powerful pounce.

However, the dynamics shift dramatically when an isolated animal manages to return to its herd. The safety in numbers becomes clear: once reunited, the group's collective strength makes it much harder for the predator to succeed. It’s a striking reminder of the importance of community and connection, as well as the dangers that lurk when we find ourselves alone.

As you step into this week, may you feel God's presence going ahead of you and remaining with you.

Have a great week.
